Recently, Cisco Systems, a multinational technology company headquartered in San Jose, California, conducted a work study on how employers could entice more employees back into the office on a hybrid or, preferably, full-time schedule.
The report focused on the findings from a survey that asked 14,050 employees and 3,800 employers across 19 countries how they felt about returning to working in the office rather than from home. The report showed that most employees, 72%, felt positive about getting back in the office. Unfortunately, only 47% believed their work environments were properly equipped to handle collaborative efforts and hybrid work environments.
The good news is that employers were responsive to this, with 81% having already redesigned their workspaces or planning to redesign them within the next 24 months. Both employers and employees agree that the workspace environment needs to foster more collaboration and creativity, and office spaces should be designed to encourage collaboration and innovation.
This survey heralds good news for corporations struggling to find ways to entice their employees back to the office on a regular workweek schedule. Employees want to return, but they also want their office spaces to support seamless collaboration, social interaction, and creative brainstorming.
Cisco Systems collected additional data stating that 90% of employers worldwide have already begun or are planning to make cosmetic and collaboration-driven enhancements to their workspaces to attract and retain top talent.
The takeaway: Creating an environment that fosters creativity, collaboration, and productivity can attract and retain a skilled workforce eager to come into the office to complete their workweek.
If you are one of the many employers looking to renovate your office, relocate to a more modern building, or set up a new office, I urge you to take the results of this survey to heart.
When you meet with your architect or design team, keep these things in mind:

When you meet with your architect or design team, keep these things in mind:
- Open layouts and flexible spaces often work best for collaborative, creative, and productive workspaces. This means incorporating flexible open work areas and meeting rooms that can be easily reconfigured based on the needs of different teams and projects.
- Maximize natural light in your workspace and incorporate biophilic design elements such as indoor plants, green walls, and natural materials. This has been shown to boost mood, creativity, and productivity.
- Invest in comfortable, ergonomic furniture that supports your employees’ well-being and productivity. This may mean adjustable desks with sit/stand options and adjustable chairs.
- Consider adding a creative zone or inspiration space. This space is meant to support brainstorming, creative thinking, and idea generation. It could be equipped with whiteboards, inspiration boards, and art supplies.
